Board members, superintendents invited to legislative agenda drafting session
From KSBA Governmental Relations
Lawmakers will return to Frankfort in January for the 2012 session and the stakes could not be higher. This will be the “long” session during which the legislature will debate the biennial state budget, so public school advocates need to be prepared to advocate for education funding and other issues affecting public education. To lay our groundwork for the session, KSBA is hosting our annual Legislative Issues Group meeting July 8, on the eve of our Summer Leadership Institute in Lexington.
The session, at the Marriott Griffin Gate in Lexington, starts with a luncheon featuring Michael Resnick, National School Boards Association associate executive director for Federal Advocacy and Public Policy. Resnick, an experienced lobbying professional and former school board member in Virginia, will focus on an update about the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act.
After lunch, we will zero in on the state budget and how to generate revenue. Education consultant Susan Perkins Weston will review the history of education funding in Kentucky. State Reps. Jim Wayne of Louisville and Bill Farmer of Lexington have been invited to present their proposals on tax reform.
Following these presentations, we will split up for small group discussions on various topics related to the legislative session. After the breakouts, the entire group will come back together to share the information discussed in the small groups. This will be your opportunity to have a voice in setting KSBA’s legislative agenda.
The July 8 meeting will begin with lunch at 11:30 a.m. and the event will conclude at 4:30 p.m. The cost to attend is $75. Lunch and refreshments are included.
School board members will receive board credit hours for attending the Legislative Issues Group and superintendents earn EILA credit as well.
