In Monday’s meeting of the Allen County Board of Education, Building and Grounds Supervisor Clark Towery and Allen County-Scottsville High School Principal Brian Carter had some good news to report regarding ongoing renovation work at AC-S.

“We have taken possession of the new fitness facility,” Towery said. “There are a few things that still need to be resolved, but we are in the building.”

Carter informed the board that the school’s new administrative offices and media center, located on the side facing the Allen County Technical Center, are finished and moving day is just around the corner.

“They are putting in the furniture this week,” Carter said. “We plan on being in the new offices and the media center January 3.”

With the completion of the new office area, work crews will immediately begin converting the old library and office areas into temporary classrooms. Once the conversion is made, a large portion of the old upstairs section of the building will be closed. Classrooms will be moved downstairs, thus allowing work crews to begin the renovation of the upstairs section. Work is expected to speed up at that point.

In other action relating to the AC-S renovation, the board approved several pay requests – primarily for the ongoing renovation work. Approvals included a $20,000 request from D. W. Wilburn, Inc., for construction on the AC-S geothermal system. The request was the final payment on a $1.315 million dollar project. The company received payment of $209,124.18 for ongoing construction, leaving a balance of over $3 million.

The board authorized approval for final pay requests to Gary Scott and Associates on three separate areas involving the renovation work. In addition, the board granted a pay request of $40,889 for construction of the new greenhouse at the high school. It was noted that the school received a $35,000 grant from the University of Kentucky Extension Service for assistance with the greenhouse. The new greenhouse replaces the previous greenhouse, which was torn down for expansion behind the school.
